As long-time followers of this blog may recall (all two of you), I have railed against the medical community in the past and continue to do so today. My biggest harangue with medical crap is the sheer volume of studies that all purport to be the final definitive answer to staying healthy in a world previously controlled by a Scott Pruitt EPA (whose motto taken from the ancient Latin translates as “Cancer unto you all!”) But then some other university or group rolls out THEIR study which negates what the previous study said. What’s a lay person to do? First eggs are bad for us…no wait, eggs are good for you. We learned that red wine could help us all live to be 120 if we’re French and spend our days past age 85 playing boules and telling lies in the park. But then we were told from another study that more than one glass of red wine a day is a certain early death. THAT was followed by yet another study that said two to three glasses of red wine per day is the only thing that’s keeping most Americans alive. And you people still wonder why I drink? Now, every time I post something like that (medical studies, etc.), people are always quick to chastise me for doing so. The hate emails begin arriving that point out that I’m no doctor and they don’t read this stupid blog to learn of the latest health findings. To those people I say, “Thhhppppppt!” It’s my blog and I’ll do what I want to. So today we learn that all the stuff they (medical community) have been telling us about the perils of dairy is bullsh*t. Seriously. According to a University of Texas study, the saturated fats in cheese, yogurt, and butter are not bad for us and may actually keep us from stroking out. Dairy products contain calcium and potassium which helps keep the blood pressure low. Plus, they all contain a particular fatty acid that acts as an anti-inflammatory. So what do you do if you’re allergic to dairy or are lactose intolerant? A study completed last January can help there. Their findings said that soya milk was the best alternative to dairy. This was mostly because of a high level of anti-cancer compounds, known as isoflavones, found in soya milk. Of course, that completely ignores the fact that soya milk tastes weird…eh, throw some Texas Pete Hot Sauce in there. That cures the taste of just about anything! OH…and the low-fat, no-fat alternatives to whole milk? Apparently, they’re so loaded with sugar as to render them borderline unhealthy! Who knew? For you friggin’ yuppies out there (and you know who you are), that like to lap up trendy almond milk…it came in dead last for substitutes. The study stated that although it can help with lowering bad cholesterol and weight loss, it lacks the basic nutrients found in soya or real milk. But wait Mr. Robin, you say…what about the supposedly harmful effects of dairy on our digestive tracks? Read on, my bloggees, read on. Someone else dropped a study of the effect of walnuts on human health. Apparently, eating a handful of walnuts a day for six weeks can significantly reduce the amount of secondary bile secretions in your digestive system thereby reducing the risk of bowel cancers. Oh, and the walnuts also help reduce the amount of cholesterol in your blood. But wait, there’s more! In another study out today, researchers at the University of Sydney (down under) proclaim that oranges contain a high level of antioxidants that can significantly reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Actually, nearly all fruits contain high levels of antioxidants, but for some reason it’s the orange that stands out. Even one a week has benefits. Okay, so there it is. Yeah, I know the aforementioned studies were likely funded by the dairy, walnut, and orange industries. Give it another 8 weeks and someone will produce a study that negates the findings of these studies. Then we’ll be back where we started.
